Experts from the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) and the National Revenue Agency (NRA) met with residents of the Black Sea town of Balchik, Northeastern Bulgaria, to inform them about the main stages and deadlines of the euro adoption in Bulgaria from January 1, 2026.
The information meeting, part of the National Information Campaign for the Introduction of the Euro in Bulgaria, was attended by CPC Dobrich Chief Inspector Mariana Koleva and NRA Dobrich Office Director Ana Kondakova.
Citizens attending the meeting raised the question of the monitoring of price hikes at present, prior to the introduction of the euro. Koleva pointed out that there is currently no increase in prices in the small consumer basket, but there is an increase in the prices of other goods, which cannot be controlled. She advised citizens to report any irregularities so that the responsible authorities can monitor and inspect the establishments where unfair practices are observed.
Koleva drew customers’ attention to the fact that when a refund claim is lodged after January 2026, traders are obliged to return the full amount in euros. If they do not have such funds available, they will be able to refund in levs, but mixed refunds are not allowed.
Kondakova added that a justified increase in prices must be motivated by objective factors. She pointed out that some of these factors include rising fuel prices, an increase in the minimum wage, higher rent, etc. However, traders must be able to prove the existence of these factors.
