site.btaAdventurer Marieta Georgieva Becomes First Bulgarian Woman to Complete Last-Degree Journey to South Pole
Bulgarian explorer and mountaineer Marieta Georgieva has reached the southernmost point on Earth after a 110-kilometre ski trek, bTV reported on Wednesday. She is the first Bulgarian woman to cover the distance from the so-called “last degree” to the geographic South Pole.
On December 14, Georgieva successfully completed the 110-kilometre ski journey from the 89th degree of southern latitude to the South Pole.
The expedition was part of the educational mission of a Sofia-based foundation called “Little Explorers – From Everest to Antarctica,” which aims to inspire children and young people to take an interest in science, geography, and the exploration of extreme environments.
Georgieva, who is the third Bulgarian woman to climb Mount Everest, has already summited six of the seven continental peaks and reached one of the two geographic poles, bTV noted. This puts her just a step away from joining the fewer than 100 people worldwide who have achieved the Explorer Grand Slam – climbing the seven continental peaks and reaching both the North and South Poles, the report adds.
