A total of 2,800 illegal disposable electronic cigarettes (vapes), each containing 15 milliliters of liquid, amounting to 42,000 ml of vaping liquid, were discovered during an inspection conducted by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department of the Sofia Customs Directorate, the Bulgarian Customs Agency reported on Thursday.
The e-cigarettes, which lacked Bulgarian excise stamps and contained nicotine liquid far exceeding the legally permitted quantity, were found in a warehouse located within Sofia. The vapes had been shipped from China, disguised as water-resistant sprays, and were shipped to a legal entity within Bulgaria.
Initial assessments indicate that the illegal vapes contain nicotine, and a laboratory analysis will determine whether the amount corresponds to what is declared on the packaging, as well as identify any other substances present in the liquid.
Since the beginning of the year, customs officers from the Sofia Customs Directorate have seized over 50,000 illegal e-cigarettes, the agency added.
