The formerly ruling GERB party said it would support all measures aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic deaths. "We will support all measures aimed at reducing the war on the roads," GERB-UDF MP Maria Dimitrova told reporters in Parliament on Wednesday.

She argued that the issue should be addressed on a non-partisan basis rather than used for political gain.

MP Valeri Lachovski welcomed a proposal by the opposition Continue the Change party to replace existing steel crash barriers with concrete barriers but said current regulations, adopted under former Regional Development Minister Andrey Tsekov and drafted by his predecessor Ivan Shishkov, do not allow that.

Lachovski said GERB was open to discussing changes to the rules and warned that road fatalities had risen by 25% in March, April and May compared with the same period in 2025.

"This is already becoming a trend and requires serious attention," he said.
