Tourism, together with transport, will see the most immediate and visible benefits from Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro, Deputy Finance Minister Metodi Metodiev said on Tuesday. He spoke at a discussion titled The Euro, the Environment and Sustainable Tourism at the Ministry of Environment and Water, attended by mayors and municipal representatives.

He said the sector has also benefited from Bulgaria’s entry into the Schengen Area.

The event took place at the Ministry of Environment and Water. Mayors and municipal representatives took part. The aim was to discuss the effects of introducing the euro on the development of sustainable tourism while protecting natural resources.

Metodiev said the euro will make price comparisons easier. He added that the need for currency exchange will disappear and transaction costs will fall. He said an increase in tourist numbers is also expected. Metodiev cited Croatia, where tourist numbers increased after the adoption of the euro.
