On May 14, a protest under the slogan "Decent work - decent pay! Without transport there is no economy!" will be held in front of Sofia public transport garages and depots, the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) press service reported on Thursday. The campaign, organized by the Federation of Transport Trade Unions at CITUB and the Federation of Transport Workers at Podkrepa Labour Confederation, is in response to the ongoing chronic underfunding of the transport sector, the lack of an adequate wage policy and the continued refusal of the responsible institutions to commit to real solutions, said the organizers.
On April 14, public transport workers already took to the streets of Sofia. Their rally closed three intersections, after which they marched to the Ministry of Finance and Sofia Municipality.
The Federation of Transport Trade Unions at CITUB insists on an urgent allocation of additional BGN 40.7 million from the state budget, which should be allocated as follows: BGN 29 million for the Sofia public transport, BGN 6.5 million for Varna, BGN 700,000 for Ruse, and BGN 4.5 million for Executive Agency Road Transport Administration. The federal organization also demands an immediate meeting between the nationally representative trade union organizations and the Ministry of Finance, the Council of Ministers, and the Sofia Municipality to find a sustainable solution.
The new protest will be held in 11 locations across the capital.
