The temporary ban on Ukrainian imports should be extended, said caretaker Agriculture Minister on Nova TV. According to him, the ban did not have the expected result.
Wheat imports to Bulgaria are not that big but alternatives should be sought. The European Union should look for export of wheat to third countries, because the quantities in Bulgaria and the whole region don’t allow for prices to go up and the ban on imports alone won’t have effect, said the Minister.
The wheat and grain crises have not been put under control and they will continue, Gechev predicted.
He said that the European Union is slow with taking decisions and they are not precise enough. “Bulgaria managed to shake the whole system. We initiated a number of actions within the EU, of which I am proud. We showed that we are a worthy member of the EU and that our voices is heard, but this is not enough,” said the Minister.
According to Gechev, the European Commission and the member countries should set up guarantee funds to aid wheat exports.
Gechev expects that the ban on Ukrainian imports will be extended despite the discontent of some European countries.
