To mark World Dyslexia Awareness Day (October 8), the National Assembly hosts an exhibition initiated by the Vazrazhdane party. The display was created by artist and special education teacher Alexandra Cholakova from Varna, with the support of Polina Kostadinova, PhD in Special Education.

According to research, between 8% and 10% of students worldwide have specific learning difficulties, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia, noted Kosta Stoyanov from Vazrazhdane during the opening on Wednesday.

“It is extremely difficult to address a topic that speaks about an absence — about an education that is somewhat impossible for a target group that is, in a way, excluded,” said Alexandra Cholakova. “These children are a true inspiration, and the challenges they face push us to keep working every day to make things happen,” she added.

“There’s nothing frightening about dyslexia or any learning difficulty, as long as we have the right kind of support, and that is why we’re here today,” Cholakova emphasized. She also pointed out that it is rare to hear public discussion about the education that fails to reach these children, or the issue of equal access to learning.

National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova said: “Parliament addresses topics that matter to society, and I believe this art installation sends a clear message. This [dyslexia] is not a sentence, but an opportunity to overcome challenges so that every child can be a full participant in school life and realize their potential.”
