Researchers from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) participated in the 17th International Congress of Slavists, held at the Sorbonne in Paris, BAS reported here Friday.

A highlight of the Congress was Marta Riparante’s report on digital methods in Slavic palaeography and Bulgarian scribal practices in the 14th century, which showcased new case studies on 14th-century scribes and demonstrated the use of digital tools, including an online database and an open-source Cyrillic palaeography toolkit for palaeographic analysis and digital representation of manuscript heritage.

The Congress also featured a BAS project about the development of Cyrillic from the 9th to 14th century in the South Slavic lands.

BAS emphasized the importance of engaging young scholars in these digital initiatives, highlighting their role in advancing the study and preservation of Slavic manuscript traditions.

The International Congress of Slavists was first held in 1929. It is a prestigious academic gathering for scholars studying Slavic languages, literature, history and culture, organized roughly every five years, and brings together specialists from all over the world to exchange research, present new findings, and foster international collaboration in Slavic studies.
