Prof. Vladko Murdarov has received a golden doctoral diploma at a solemn ceremony at the University of Vienna on the 50th anniversary of his PhD in Philosophy, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) press centre said on Monday.

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Stefan Newerkla, head of the Institute of Slavic Studies, said that Murdarov, a recipient of the Gottfried von Herder fellowship, has authored 27 books and more than 1,150 scientific articles published in renowned international journals. As a translator, Murdarov has introduced Bulgarian audiences to over 150 plays by German and Swiss playwrights, as well as more than 370 plays by Austrian authors, including Arthur Schnitzler, Robert Musil, Odon von Horvath, Elfriede Jelinek, Peter Handke, Peter Turrini, and Thomas Bernhard. Many of these plays have been staged in various Bulgarian theatres over the years and continue to be performed today.

Newerkla emphasized that Murdarov’s contributions are highly valued in Austria, where he has been honored with the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art (2001), the Austrian state prize for literary translation (2002), and the Honour Badge for Merit of the Republic of Austria (2013), BAS said. These state awards reflect not only his outstanding scholarly authority but also his cultural dedication and ability to build bridges between languages, worlds, and people, the press release added.
