Bulgaria’s Culture Minister Marian Bachev conferred Golden Age Awards on more than 40 distinguished artists on Wednesday. The awards are given every year for the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture and Slav Letters, marked on May 24.

“For us, the people of art, May 24 is not just a date on the calendar. May 24 is a feeling we carry in our hearts every day. It is not only because of our vocation and the path we have chosen, but because culture is not just a profession - it is a soul,” Bachev said.

Describing May 24 as “the most unifying Bulgarian holiday,” the Culture Minister said that "with the brilliant talent of Bulgarian artists and the high achievements of our scientists, educators and cultural figures, we have earned our rightful place in the modern world."

Addressing the award recipients, Bachev said: “The honours you are receiving today as artists and cultural figures are yet another symbol of our sincere gratitude to you - our talented and inspiring mentors, guiding us along the path of spirituality.” The Minister also praised them for pursuing their mission “with dignity, perseverance and inspiration”, and for exemplifying through their work what it means to be an artist.
