Veselin Nachev's exhibition 10 Movies from 20 Century will be on display in Sofia's Stubel Gallery between May 20 and June 7, the organizers said. In his fifth exhibition at the gallery, the artist reveals a soft spot for the big screen with works created in the last year and inspired by landmark films by Michelangelo Antonioni, Luchino Visconti, the Taviani brothers, Martin Scorsese, among others.
Nachev shared: "I like cinema - especially that of the past, which has left a much deeper mark on me than most films today. I wasn't looking for a connection between the films. The selection was the result of my looking for visual equivalent to the emotions they evoked. My goal is not to try to retell the plot or recreate footage from a film, but to convey the feeling and memory of it."
Nachev was born in Burgas, on the Black Sea, in 1958. He graduated in painting at the Academy of Arts in 1985. He has over 30 solo exhibitions in Bulgaria, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and over 25 appearances in collective exhibitions in Bulgaria, Georgia, the US, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Finland.
He has been awarded the Varna Award for Contribution to Pictorial Art, the Allianz Bulgaria National Award for Painting, the Zahari Zograf National Award for painting.
