Sofia Theatre staged Peer Gynt in Oslo on Wednesday. Actor and director of Sofia Theatre Iriney Konstantinov told BTA: "It felt as if we were performing this play for the first time - a new environment, a new place, in very close contact with the audience, a new inner transformation of each of us".

Konstantinov described the evening as powerful and emotionally charged, as he felt the connection between the actors and the audience. Konstantinov and Alexander Tonev were cast as Peer Gynt in Henrik Ibsen's play of the same name.

Reactions

Konstantinov shared that the audience was delighted to watch Bulgarian theatre for the first time in Oslo. He added: "Ambassador Dessislava Ivanova came on stage with tears in her eyes and said she was grateful to have her new term start with performance by Sofia Theatre".

Konstantinov spoke about Peer Gynt being a sensitive subject for the local people. The director of Sofia Theatre said: "This national hero is a symbol of Norwegian survival, going through all kinds of obstacles, going through the world".

Half of the auditorium was comprised of Norwegian guests, while the other half consisted of members of the Bulgarian diaspora in Norway. "We received a lot of praise, a lot of flowers, a lot of emotions. The worries we felt at the beginning while arranging the performance, it was worth it" Konstantinov said.

BTA is a media partner of the event.

Peer Gynt was made possible under the Peer Gynt Travels project and a grant agreement under the RA14 Cultural Entrepreneurship, Heritage and Cooperation programme, funded by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021, the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.
