One of the two towns which claim to be the capital of Bulgaria's Rose Valley crowned its Rose Queen on Friday night. The people of Kazanlak gave the 55th annual distinction to Kristina Popova, who has just finished high school. The crowning ceremony in the central Seuthopolis Square was held after Kristina was selected as the winner in the Rose Queen Competition on May 19.
The rival town of Karlovo named its own Rose Queen on May 12. The honour went to 16-year-old Antonia Lalova.
The ceremony in Kazanlak took place at the height of the 120th Rose Festival. Pop and folk singers gave a concert, with Romanian artist Inna as the main star. The event ended with a fireworks display.
The show came on the second day of the BTA-hosted World Meeting of Bulgarian Media (June 1-4), also taking place in Kazanlak.
