Zara Pehlivani, a Bulgarian woman in Las Vegas, has set up a Bulgarian reading room there, the Bulgarian Consulate General in Los Angeles said. Pehlivani, who is gold medallist at the Division II USA Fencing National Championships, dreams of spreading over her reading room project to other US cities.

The Bulgarian reading room is located on the second floor of the Balkan Bar and Grill Bulgarian restaurant. It is a small library with books for both children and adults that can be borrowed and swapped between Bulgarians who live in the city. The room also has a special section with games and sketchbooks for kids.

Pehlivani believes that the reading room can bring together Bulgarians to hold discussions or meetings with writers, to celebrate and preserve their culture.

The Bulgarian Consulate General in Los Angeles said it will donate a few books to Pehlivani's reading room. It will also give her books donated by Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova.
