Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev and Union of Bulgarian Philatelists Honorary Chair Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha on Friday validated the first stamps in a new issue dedicated to Bulgarian queens, the Transport Ministry’s press service said. The issue features Princess Maria, Giovanna of Savoy, Irene Lekapene and Margarita Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

Speaking at the ceremony, Peev said the issue brings together different periods of Bulgarian history and recalls figures who left a lasting mark on statehood and culture.

“I am convinced that this issue will be appreciated both by philatelists and by all who love Bulgarian history. It marks the beginning of a much-loved philatelic series,” he said.

Peev congratulated artist Todor Angeliev on the project, which honours the strong women beside Bulgarian rulers. Saxe-Coburg-Gotha thanked Angeliev for the stamp issue and presented him with a gold badge of the Union of Bulgarian Philatelists.

The event was also attended by Bulgarian Posts Executive Director Zdravko Anakiev, Union of Bulgarian Philatelists Chair Spas Panchev and others, the press service said.
