A special stamp issue commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of the Bulgarians against Ottoman rule was officially released in the historic town of Perushtitsa on Tuesday by Vachka Ivanova, Director of Bulgarian Posts for the South Central Region.
The official ceremony was also attended by Perushtitsa Mayor Nikolay Bakov and artist Petar Chuchuligov, who created the issue.
Ivanova said that the theme of the April Uprising is widely represented on Bulgarian postage stamps. The new product, consisting of a stamp in a block print run and a special postmark, has been printed in 5,100 copies, she said.
She added that the stamp will be sold everywhere, while the special postmark will remain in Perushtitsa for three days before being returned to Sofia.
The first envelope bearing the stamp was presented to the Mayor of Perushtitsa, who in turn donated it to the local History Museum. "What we are doing now is history," said Bakov.
