Sliven has always been at the forefront of national struggles, Sliven Mayor Stefan Radev said during a conference dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising at the BTA National Press Club here on Thursday.

He said that Sliven has a historical role as the centre of the Second Revolutionary District out of the four revolutionary districts in Bulgaria during the uprising. Radev specifically addressed the attending students at the conference, emphasizing that Sliven has always been at the forefront of all struggles that Bulgarians have waged, including for church independence, for independent education, and for national liberation.

The geographical location of Sliven made revolutionary activity particularly difficult, Radev pointed out, adding that there were many Turkish troops in the town, which made it difficult to organize an uprising. "Nevertheless, revolutionary committees were created in Sliven and detachments that took part in the April Uprising left from here. This uprising really became one of the reasons for the Russo-Turkish War, which led to the Liberation of Bulgaria a few years later,” he stressed.

Radev thanked BTA for the initiative to bring together historians, public figures and students in a conversation about the lessons of the April Uprising and their significance for modern Bulgaria.

BTA's series of conferences are part of a joint initiative with Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), called “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe”, aiming to commemorate anniversaries in Bulgarian history that are significant for European history through to 2032, when 1,400 years will be marked since the establishment of the first Bulgarian state in Europe - Old Great Bulgaria.
