Bulgaria has become a key part of the European wine production and wine tourism network with its official accession to the prestigious European wine route Iter Vitis, Iter Vitis European Federation President Emanuela Panke said at the BTA National Press Club in Sofia on Thursday.
Bulgaria is the 25th member of the Iter Vitis route, which is one of the cultural routes of the Council of Europe. The programme aims to highlight and add value to the culture of the entire European continent. Cultural routes are built on various pillars, including archaeological and historical ones.
She emphasized Bulgaria’s significance with its archaeological, historical and cultural assets, as well as its indigenous grape varieties such as Mavrud and Dimyat, which demonstrate both biodiversity and the civilizations that have passed through the country.
Panke added that Iter Vitis membership strengthens cross-border connections and opens opportunities for partnerships with neighbouring countries, helping to create a robust wine tourism offering. The initiative not only supports local winemakers but also contributes to the broader community’s economy.
Emanuela Panke noted that this is the first step in a series of planned activities aimed at developing and giving full meaning to Bulgaria’s involvement in the route.
