The Bulgarian Government will ensure the collection of admissible evidence to serve the course of justice in the Elenite resort flood tragedy, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said on Friday near the village of Konush (Southern Bulgaria).

He noted that the tragedy was the result of “an accumulation of many elements, primarily human intervention in areas where nature has shown that, sooner or later, it can reassert its superiority over man.” The Prime Minister assured that all aspects are being examined, from urban planning and construction regulations to the broader issue of how such problems can be properly addressed and financed to prevent similar disasters in the future.

Zhelyazkov emphasized that the early warning system functioned effectively, which helped save many lives. He also pointed out that the timely decision to stop traffic near Elenite had prevented what could have been serious consequences from the tidal wave.

The Prime Minister took part in the inauguration of the reconstructed main canal M-1, part of the Trakiets irrigation network, together with European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen and Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Georgi Tahov.
