The BG-Alert system was activated by the municipal authority of Ruse on Thursday for partial evacuation of the village of Nikolovo and preparations for evacuation of the village of Sandrovo and the town of Marten, as the embankment of the Nikolovo reservoir was compromised, Ruse Mayor Pencho Milkov said.
Milkov commented that a landslide was detected on Thursday morning, coming from the reservoir wall in the direction of the village of Nikolovo as a result of heavy rainfall since Tuesday. "We are carefully lowering the water level to prevent worsening conditions in Marten. Units have been deployed to pump out water, and access to the road adjacent to the wall is being restricted," he said.
Engineer Simislav Mihaylov, the operator of the municipally owned reservoirs in Ruse, said the Nikolovo dam contains 1.1 million cubic metres of water and is being drained at 200 litres per second to avoid flooding. "For me, it is very dangerous because the wall could break in a short time," he stressed.
Buses and accommodation in Ruse have been provided for people who have nowhere else to go, he added, noting that Arena Ruse will be used as a temporary reception point for residents of the village of Nikolovo. "Social workers and psychologists are on site to welcome people and accommodate them in hotels," the municipal authorities said.
Ruse deputy mayors Nikola Lazarov and Dimitar Nedev, Nikolovo Mayor Zlatan Vanev and Georgi Ignatov, head of the Public Order and Security Directorate, are also on site, monitoring the situation.
