Environment and Water Minister Manol Genov has ordered the Black Sea Basin Directorate to conduct an urgent probe into whether construction development in dry ravines in the Elenite seaside resort was coordinated with the Directorate.

The news comes after a man in Elenite died following heavy rainfall in Burgas Region in Southeastern Bulgaria. The rain caused flooding and damage in what were described as “dry ravines”.

Announcing the probe at a briefing in the Council of Ministers on Friday, Genov said that, strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a “dry ravine”. He said a large amount of rain dumped on Elenite in a very short time. He said the rainfall was 200 to 250 litres per square metre, according to data from weather stations.
