The number of pending complaints against Bulgaria before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is decreasing, and this is a lasting trend, said Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev during Parliament's Question Time on Friday. "Our country ranks 19th among Member States with 422 pending complaints. For the third consecutive year, we have fewer than 600 complaints," he added.

Compliance with ECHR practice is one of the most important tools for protecting human rights in Bulgaria, and progress has been made in a number of areas in recent decades, he added. The court's aim is to harmonize the legislative framework in the Member States in a way that guarantees protection of human rights.

"We have the expert capacity to represent Bulgaria adequately and with dignity before the ECHR," Georgiev added, but highlighted a lack of coordination between institutions regarding the court's decisions. He announced that regulatory decisions are being prepared to create a coordination mechanism to act in unison in the event of convictions or when the State is involved in court proceedings.
