An increasing number of men and women want to join the Navy, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Kiril Mihaylov said in Varna on Saturday during an event marking the 146th anniversary of this country’s naval forces. Among the attendees were Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov and the Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov.
Mihaylov recalled that the Bulgarian Navy was established on August 12, 1879. “Since then Bulgarian sailors have been carrying out their duties with dedication, dignity, and honor,” he added. “The Navy’s most important task is to ensure the sovereignty of our country,” Mihaylov noted, adding that ”in a world facing an increasing number of military conflicts, the naval forces must be prepared to serve as a deterrent against any enemy.”
The Navy is constantly evolving, the commander added. In addition to the upcoming commissioning of new multi-purpose vessels, Mihaylov spoke of this country acquiring new autonomous underwater vehicles. He noted that these advancements come with new challenges, as they require trained and highly skilled personnel.
