Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov congratulated Bulgaria’s railway workers on the occasion of their professional holiday, celebrated on the first Sunday of August every year, the Transport Ministry said in a press release on Saturday. “Dear railway workers, colleagues, and friends, it is an honour to greet you on the occasion of Railway Workers’ Day – a celebration of those who, with dedication, professionalism, and quiet devotion, sustain one of the most vital links in our economy and society – the Bulgarian railway,” Karadjov said.

He noted that it is no coincidence the holiday is marked at the beginning of August – the month in which, 137 years ago, Bulgaria made a major leap toward regional and global connectivity with the inauguration of the Tsaribrod–Sofia–Belovo line for international transport. That same year, the state also acquired the Ruse–Varna line – the country’s first – laying the foundation for the Bulgarian State Railways.

Karadjov said he has had the honour of meeting many railway workers in person and was deeply impressed by the passion with which they speak about their work, the future of the railway, and its potential to drive modern, sustainable, and efficient mobility. “I look forward to meeting many more of you – and I am confident that you are just as dedicated, just as professional, and just as committed to building something meaningful,” he added.

“Today, as Europe and the world seek green solutions and sustainable modes of transport, the railway system is once again taking centre stage. Our shared task is to make it faster, safer, more modern, and more accessible,” the statement continued.

In his address, the Minister thanked railway workers for their night shifts, their resolve in difficult moments, and for never giving up – for carrying their profession with honour, today just as 137 years ago.

“Stay healthy, confident, and proud of your work. I wish you new horizons – along sustainable rails, with clear direction and human dignity,” Karadjov concluded.
