Parliament Chair Nataliya Kiselova Friday paid tribute to Bulgarian hero and freedom fighter Vassil Levski on the occasion of his 188th birth anniversary. She was in the western town of Etropole, where a Levski monument was unveiled.
"Today, Levski reminds us of something we sometimes forget — that Bulgarians, through their own efforts, can achieve anything. Levski believed in his people like no one else did — that with their own strength, they could achieve not only political liberation and church independence, but become a people equal to others," said Natalia Kiselova.
She also said: "Today’s times are not as heroic as they once were. On the eve of the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, we will begin to reflect once again on every moment in which there was doubt whether Bulgarians could have their own independent state and manage their own destiny. [...] For sure, the children we hear around us and their cheerful voices remind us that there is hope. [...] Bulgaria can, and we can do it together!"
Vice President Iliana Iotova also took part in the ceremony for the unveiling of the monument.
