Bulgaria’s nominee for judge at the European Union, Associate Professor Dr. Alexander Kornezov, has been approved by the EU committee established under Article 255 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the Court of Justice of the EU said on Friday.

The committee was created by the Treaty of Lisbon and has the authority to assess candidates for judge on their competence in EU law, professional experience, language skills, independence, and integrity. Based on a written procedure and an oral interview, the committee issues either a positive or negative opinion on the respective candidate.

The committee consists of seven jurists recognized for their expertise in the European Union. Its current members are: Prof. Dr. Allan Rosas, former Deputy Director-General of the Legal Service of the European Commission and former judge at the Court of Justice of the EU; Frank Clarke, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ireland; Prof. Dr. Julia Laffranque, judge at the Supreme Court of Estonia and former judge at the European Court of Human Rights; Maria Eugénia Martins De Nazaré Ribeiro, former judge and presiding judge at the General Court of the EU; Dr. Barbara Pořízková, Vice-President of the Supreme Administrative Court of the Czech Republic; Prof. Dr. Silvana Sciarra, former President of the Constitutional Court of Italy; and Prof. Dr. Vassilios Skouris, former President of the Court of Justice of the EU.

Alexander Kornezov graduated in law from Sofia University and obtained a Master’s degree in European law from the College of Europe in Bruges. He has been a lawyer at the Brussels Bar, a law clerk at the Court of Justice of the EU, and a judge at the EU Civil Service Tribunal. Since 2016, he has served as a judge at the General Court of the EU, where his colleagues elected him as presiding judge of a chamber for two consecutive terms.

Kornezov is the author of several monographs and over 60 academic works and publications in Bulgarian, English, and French.

Since 2020, Kornezov has been teaching at the University of Luxembourg. He has lectured at numerous prestigious universities and international conferences. In the past, he taught at the University of National and World Economy and at Sofia University.
