Asking whether Bulgaria is ready for the euro area after the two largest EU institutions - the European Central Bank and the European Commission - said so in the convergence report on the country's readiness is a paradox, GERB leader Boyko Borissov said during a national meeting of his party in Plovdiv on Sunday. "We set our party's name to bring Bulgaria into Schengen, the eurozone, the European Banking Union, and now everyone is climbing on GERB's back because only we are able to take Bulgaria on the European path of development," he added.
According to Borissov, what expects Bulgaria after it joins the eurozone is improved economy, industry, investment, and people's incomes.
Powerful work is being done in the military-industrial complex, military industry, innovation, modern weapons and modern means of warfare and defence, he noted. "There are a lot of projects which, if we get them done, we need to prepare BGN 39 billion. So, it is not an end in itself to stay in power. The most advantageous thing for the party is to enter the eurozone and to have some early elections. But it would be disastrous for the country," Borissov said. "Our country is important and we will hold on as long as we see that society needs it. The protests are in front of my house, in front of my headquarters, in front of GERB. We can bear up to a point, if we see that others do not take all this into account - I will gather you and together with colleagues from the BSP and There Is Such a People we will do an audit of this parliament," Borisov said.
He also said that "the President should be the unifier of the nation, but every statement he makes is divisive. He should stop using the presidential institution as a private airline, and come out and fight with us like we do."
"In four years, the Trakia Motorway has fallen apart, the road maintenance is gone. We came, and the repairs started again. Why were the roads not maintained for four years," said the GERB leader and former prime minister.
He added that he had promised Plovdiv "the stadiums, swimming pools, schools, high schools and the Ring Road," and that he would no longer run for MP from Plovdiv. GERB did not allow illegal immigrants in Bulgaria for years. "And regarding the Green Deal - we did not do the stupid thing to close the nuclear power plant and the coal-fired power plants, we managed to preserve our energy capacities. Being a conservative party, we managed to save face with our conservative Christian policy concerning the family," Borissov told the GERB national meeting.
