The high-speed internet project is a digital campaign targeting sparsely populated areas with no market potential, said Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov here on Tuesday. He was speaking during the signing of six contracts for the construction of digital networks across the country at the Council of Ministers.
Through state partnership and support from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, over 7,000 kilometers of fiber-optic network will be built to enable access to high-speed internet, as well as provide an opportunity for the development of regional policy and, as a result, an improved demographic policy.
Instead of digital nomadism, the focus will be on opportunities, not only for those already living in these settlements, but also for future businesses that will have the potential to grow there, the Prime Minister noted. A process of subsequent regulation is forthcoming, so that all telecommunications operators will have access to the infrastructure and be able to offer a variety of digital services.
The project faced significant delays because the State had not adopted the necessary legislation. To address this, between February and April, the National Assembly almost unanimously passed the Digital Networks Act, it was noted during the contract signing. The total value of the project activities is BGN 433,613,866 (excluding VAT), of which BGN 390,027,846 (excluding VAT) comes from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
