The Fridtjof Nansen Institute of Oceanology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Varna visited the Flora Exhibition Centre in Burgas on Sunday on the occasion of World Oceans Day.

With the help of thematic comics, demonstrations of equipment, observations with a microscope, card games, exhibits and with a willingness to answer any question that arose, the scientists and experts from the institute managed to attract the attention of passers-by. Various oceanographic instruments and their applications for monitoring the marine environment, sampling methods and assessment of different groups of marine plants and animals were presented.

The team told BTA that such out-of-town initiatives in public places happen much more often in Varna, and that is why they decided that the residents and guests of Burgas would also be interested in learning more about the large body of water they live with. They emphasized the importance of the seas and oceans, as well as why it is important for everyone to protect the biodiversity and natural resources of the Black Sea.

Attention was also paid to the current challenges facing the Black Sea, including climate change, eutrophication, invasive species, overfishing, habitat loss and marine litter. In the form of a game, children had the opportunity to discover where the greatest concentration of different species of animals is in the waters of the Black Sea, the coasts, and in the air above the Black Sea. They then had the opportunity to take home a new comic book and a booklet, prepared by biologists and ecologists from the Institute.

The initiative was carried out within the framework of the Black Sea Blue Academy 2025 project in partnership with Burgas Municipality, the Burgas Regional Information Centre, the Green Balkans Association, and the Friends of the Sea - Burgas centre.
