The European Investment Bank (EIB) will consult Burgas on the plan to create a leading science centre that will serve the city’s universities, the municipal press centre said on Friday.
Burgas Municipality will develop a modern science campus and will seek to attract Bulgarian and international researchers and students with guidance from the European Investment Bank. This was agreed by EIB Advisory Head of Public & Infrastructure Finance Division Julien Chebbo and Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov. The agreement includes the development of a structure and model for managing the campus’s activities, identifying financing options and developing a data centre concept to support its digital infrastructure. The model should be comparable to best practices from similar European innovation and education campuses.
The new campus is due to open in 2027 and will serve the universities of Burgas. It will feature research and development centres, as well as student housing and sports facilities.
“Creating a quality space for studying, working and living is key to attract young people and retain talent in cohesion regions,” said EIB Vice-President Kyriacos Kakouris. “We are pleased to support Burgas in structuring a viable economic model for the new campus, which will enhance the city’s position in the higher-education landscape, promoting innovation and economic growth.”
"Burgas Municipality places a strong emphasis on the development of higher education in the city, as a condition for attracting young people to study, develop and find their place to live here. Therefore, a modern environment is needed that seamlessly combines opportunities for education and science with quality housing conditions. This environment will inspire and support the development of specialists in various academic fields and the achievement of top scientific achievements," Nikolov emphasized.
