There are currently 589 unaccompanied children from Ukraine in Bulgaria and 68 from Syria, Afghanistan, Egypt, and Iraq, Mariana Tosheva, chairperson of the State Agency for Refugees, told the Bulgarian News Agency on Monday. Tosheva took part in an event at the Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) Refugee Community Support Centre in Sofia, where the Japanese Embassy in Bulgaria presented a donation to the BRC.

"The measures outlined in the humanitarian programme, including shelter, school enrollment and other forms of support, will continue for Ukrainian children. We classify them as unaccompanied because they are not accompanied by a parent, but many are not entirely alone. Some have their relatives here or are still part of the sports teams they fled with and registered with in Bulgaria," she added.

"The Ukrainian children have adapted very quickly in Bulgaria,” Tosheva said. She added that children from other countries often need more support, especially since many are teenagers who have not attended school in five or six years or in some cases, ever. “Their integration into our education system is much more challenging and requires much more assistance."
