Joining the eurozone will integrate Bulgaria even more, which is so important in these difficult times, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, former Prime Minister of Bulgaria from 2001 to 2005, told journalists on Thursday.

"I have lived abroad for so many years. I saw with my own eyes the transition to the euro in Italy and Spain. Nothing tragic happened," said Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He recalled that joining the eurozone was laid down in the treaty of accession to the European Union 20 years ago.

"I think this will be beneficial for everyone. Sometimes new things cause some concern," he noted. "We are part of an important union and organization. We can only be proud of this and move forward with desire and enthusiasm," he added.

Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha participated on Thursday in a Bulgarian-Romanian forum on the topic: "Liberals Shape the Future: 20 Years Since the Treaty of Accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU", held at the Vrana Palace, on the outskirts of Sofia.

"This is a long period in a person's life, but in fact it is a moment in our history. Through joint efforts with Romania, we have achieved something that could not be achieved through wars in the past. This is a very important achievement for both countries. It will be felt more and more," he added.

The discussion was organized by the European Liberal Forum and the Liberal Institute for Political Analysis (LIPA), with the participation of the Liberal Integration Foundation, OTCA (O Tara ca Afara), and the Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD).
