Bulgarian Veterinary Union Chair Dimitar Tsankov expressed the support of the organization for all initiatives aimed at the protection of animals and the prevention of cruel treatment against them. Tsankov took part in a round table under the motto "Together Against Cruelty! New Threats and Effective Solutions for Animal Protection", which was held on Monday in Sofia.
Tsankov declared that veterinary specialists are a direct witness to the suffering of animals and a key partner in the building of adequate policies and mechanisms for prevention and control.
The Bulgarian Veterinary Union supports efforts for the establishment of a working legislative framework, which would unite the public commitment and institutional responsibility in animal protection, Tsankov added.
Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov also participated at the opening of the forum. He said that effective laws and proper law enforcement should be the main goal of Bulgarian legislation. Zhelyazkov noted that the Government responded quickly to recent incidents of animal cruelty and immediately drafted legislative amendments, which, along with other proposals, have already passed on first reading in the National Assembly.
