site.btaThere Will Be No Euro Referendum, One Would Violate the Constitution - Opposition Leader Says

“There will be no referendum on adopting the euro, because that would mean violating the Constitution," Nikolay Denkov, co-chair of the parliamentary group of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria coalition, told reporters in the BTA National Press Club in Silistra. In his words, the only debatable thing is what the President's motivation is.
Bulgaria is hoping for accession to the eurozone in 2026. Ad-hoc reports on Bulgaria's readiness for that - one by the European Central Bank and one by the European Commission, are due in June 2025.
President Radev has proposed a referendum with the question "Do you agree to have Bulgaria adopt the single European currency euro in 2026?".
"Adopting the euro is the final step in our journey to becoming a full-fledged member of Europe - the place where major decisions are made, large investments occur, and where people live best.
We are witnessing intense propaganda ahead of this step, and people are being misled in many different ways. The truth is that if there are any differences, they will lie in the much stronger oversight of banks and the gradual decrease in interest rates, as the perceived risk for investors will be reduced,” Denkov said.
