Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov met the Vice President for the Europe and Central Asia Region at the World Bank, Antonella Bassani, at the Council of Ministers on Thursday, the government’s press office announced. "Regaining the stability and sustainability of public finances and combating the informal economy are among the main tasks of the government," the Prime Minister said.

Rosen Zhelyazkov identified the stability of public finances as a key element on the country's path to euro area membership. He confirmed that Bulgaria’s main goal is to achieve a predictable economic environment, which is a prerequisite for economic growth. He pointed out that the country has met all the criteria for membership in the euro area and expects the ad-hoc convergence reports by the European Commission and the European Central Bank.

"In this dynamic environment, we highly value the dialogue and cooperation between the World Bank and Bulgaria, correlated to the approved Country Partnership Framework for the Period FY25 - FY29. We salute the Bank’s interest to remain committed to the efforts to develop this cooperation,” Zhelyazkov said at the meeting. The Prime Minister emphasized that the government sees the Partnership Framework as a solid foundation for productive cooperation between the World Bank Group and Bulgaria in the coming years.

The meeting assessed Sofia’s role as host of the World Bank Shared Services Center, which plays an important role in the effective administration of the Bank’s operations in various countries and has a positive impact on the economic environment in Bulgaria, the press release said.

Earlier today, the Minister of Education and Science, Krasimir Valchev, and the Executive Director of Bulgarian Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Agency (BSMEPA), Boyko Takov, signed two agreements with the World Bank in support of education and business in Northern Bulgaria.
