Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) President Prof. Evelina Slavcheva met with India's Ambassador Arun Kumar Sahu on April 30, BAS said on Friday.

The diplomat noted the dynamic development of science in India and stressed the need to establish a formal cooperation framework between BAS and scientific organizations in India, which would strengthen ties between the scientific communities of the two countries.

Opportunities for Indian doctoral students to study at BAS research units and the organization of joint events with India's Embassy were also discussed.

The areas of interest for collaboration include biotechnology, agrobiotechnology, pharmacology, space research and informatics. To that end, it was decided to draft a cooperation agreement between BAS and the Ministry of Science and Technology of India, under which specific partnerships between Bulgarian and Indian institutes will be pursued.

The meeting was attended by BAS Vice-President Prof. Emmanuel Moutafov, who expressed hope that cultural exchange between India and Bulgaria, or at least mutual awareness, would approach the levels of interest and interaction seen before 1989. The proposal included exchanging lecturers to showcase Bulgarian culture and traditions in India and Indian heritage in Bulgaria.
