Sofia’s draft 2025 budget earmarks substantial resources for the Sofia’s Green System, Ecology and Land Use, Mayor Vasil Terziev wrote on Facebook Saturday.
Waste management dominates the plan: BGN 86.5 million goes to household-waste collection and BGN 88.2 million to treatment and landfill operations, including a new smart-tracking system for refuse lorries to tighten oversight.
Street cleanliness is another priority, with BGN 119.8 million set aside for more frequent sweeping under tougher service-quality clauses. Parks, gardens and green spaces will receive BGN 38.45 million, and the municipality will for the first time look after school, kindergarten, social-care and cemetery greenery while creating new park areas.
The budget allocates BGN 1.65 million to upgrade spaces between apartment blocks, plus BGN 0.5 million for local air-quality initiatives. These complement an EU-funded BGN 73.6 million programme to replace old stoves with cleaner heating. Additional sums include BGN 2.48 million for riverbed cleaning and BGN 1.94 million for a photovoltaic array at the city zoo.
Terziev recently signed a Green Measures for Cleaner Air agreement with Environment Minister Manol Genov to cut fine-particle emissions through new green infrastructure.
Sofia Municipality presented the draft budget on 16 April at Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, followed by a public discussion.
