Several earthquakes have been registered in the Bulgarian Black Sea area near Nessebar, according to data from the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, published on the Institute's website on Friday.
The first quake with a magnitude of 3.3 on the Richter scale was registered on April 24 at 11:09 p.m. EEST. Its epicentre was 30 km from the city of Burgas and 380 km from the city of Sofia, the Institute said on its Facebook page.
An earthquake was also registered on April 25 with a magnitude of 3.2 Richter at EEST 9:17 a.m.. Its epicentre was 17 km from the town of Nessebar, 40 km from Burgas and 380 km from Sofia.
The last earthquake had a magnitude of 2.9 Richter and a depth of 15 km. There had also been several tremors before that. According to the Institute’s website, the strongest quake had a magnitude of 3.5 and occurred at EEST 10:43 a.m..
There was no evidence that the tremors were felt in Nessebar, BTA correspondents reported. The locals commented that the tremors were probably weak since they were not felt on the higher floors of the residential buildings.
“These are weak to moderate earthquakes, unrelated to those in Western Turkiye. There has been seismic activity in the Nessebar bay region in the past, which may account for the tremors,” the Institute’s seismologist on duty said.
An earthquake measuring 6.2 points on the Richter scale shook Istanbul and the surrounding area on April 23. More than 150 people were injured while trying to escape, and many were frightened by the shaking. The shockwaves reached Bulgaria and were felt across the country.
