East Timor is a promising partner for Bulgaria in the Southeast Asian region and friendship between the two countries is based on shared values related to human rights, democracy, and the basic international order. Bilateral relations can be built on these foundations, President Rumen Radev said when he received on Tuesday the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Jose Ramos-Horta, who is on a working visit to Bulgaria.
President Radev commended his counterpart of Timor-Leste, who is an example of defending the national independence of his country, a Nobel Peace Prize winner since 1996, and a key figure in the progress and development of his country on the path to democracy and accelerated economic development.
“We highly value Timor-Leste's cooperative role and relations with the European Union, the aspiration for full membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and we expect that there will indeed be an important result in this direction,” Radev said. He also underlined the active cooperation between the two countries within the UN.
“Bulgaria fully understands the problems that your country is facing and we are ready to provide assistance in your ambition to have a stronger economy, greater independence, efficient agriculture, quality education, healthcare and infrastructure,” Rumen Radev added. He expressed his conviction that there are a number of areas where the two countries can be mutually beneficial.
