The Plenum of the Supreme Judicial Council terminated the postponed procedure for electing a Prosecutor General at its extraordinary session on Thursday. The decision was adopted unanimously. The meeting was convened at the request of Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev.

The procedure was previously delayed by the Prosecutors College of the SJC, pending the promulgation of amendments to the Judicial System Act in the State Gazette. The amendments, passed conclusively by Parliament, allow for the termination of the Prosecutor General election process through transitional and final provisions.

The amendments were promulgated in the State Gazette on January 21.

The sole candidate in the election process was Borislav Sarafov, who currently serves as acting Prosecutor General.

Speaking to reporters before the extraordinary meeting of the Plenum of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Thursday, Georgiev said "Some politicians are talking about pausing the procedure, but that is untrue and misleading. There is a difference between pausing and terminating a procedure. When paused, it can be resumed. This procedure must be terminated. A new procedure can then be conducted by the SJC with newly elected members, in compliance with the law."
