site.btaPM, Ministers: Fee on Russian Gas Transit Affects Gazprom's Profits, Not EU Citizens
The fee introduced on October 13 on import and transit of Russian gas through Bulgaria will not impact European consumers, a delegation comprised of Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, Deputy Prime Minister Mariya Gabriel, Finance Minister Assen Vassilev and Energy Minister Rumen Radev told EU ambassadors, the Government Information Service reported Wednesday. It will only affect Gazprom's profits, the delegation added.
Denkov stated that the EU must be independent from Russian gas, as it is unacceptable to use European taxpayers' money to finance Russia's war against Ukraine.
The forum also discussed the conflict in the Middle East, migration, the EU's competitiveness and other topics on the agenda of this week's European Council.
Denkov used the forum to reiterate the arguments for Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen area, saying that if the country does not need to protect its borders with Greece and with Romania, it will have the capacity to direct more resources to its borders with Turkiye and Serbia. The Prime Minister expressed hope that at the regular European Council meeting in December, the right decision will be taken for the benefit of Bulgarian and European citizens and businesses.
