Russia has extended its notification establishing a temporary warning area in the Black Sea, which includes parts of Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, for the period from August 7 to 19, 2023, BTA found by a search of the Varna-based Black Sea Maritime Coordination Element. The area is established in connection with the conduct of a military exercise.

According to Russia's Shipping Safety Service, the Russian Navy will be conducting missile and artillery firing practice.

Several days ago, the Bulgarian Defence Ministry assured the public that there is no cause for worry and the exercise is taking place far from Bulgaria's territorial waters.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said a couple of days ago that Russia may extend for a third time its notification that was initially made on July 18 for ten days and was extended for a further ten days on July 29.

"The Black Sea is being militarized, whether we want it or not," Denkov said, blaming the militarization on Russia's aggression. He was fielding questions from individuals and media on Facebook.
