The caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev said in an interview for bTV on Thursday that the explosion near the car of Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev on May 1 was not intended to kill Geshev, nor could it do so. Demerdzhiev, however, said that the attack was carried out by professionals.
The Minister was adamant that the explosion could not have killed Geshev or any other of the passengers in the armoured vehicle. The investigation is looking into all possible motives, including trying to warn or intimidate Geshev.
Demerdzhiev said that the investigation has found evidence that could lead to potential suspects. He added: "There is other evidence that points to several other persons' phones having suspicious movement in that area. All this data is currently being analyzed, but it is a huge volume of evidence". Europol and partner agencies are also helping with the data analysis.
Asked whether the murder of Krasimir "Kuro" Kamenov could be linked to what is happening in Bulgaria, Demerdzhiev said that when events occur at the same time, they may be connected, and the Ministry of Interior is looking for such connections.
The Minister said that the trail regarding the perpetrators of Kamenov's murder does not seem to be Bulgarian, however, the investigation should not rule out a scenario where the murder was ordered by someone in Bulgaria.
