Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev is paying a working visit to the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday, his office said.
In meetings with members of the European Parliament Geshev will discuss the challenges to the rule of law within the context of unlawful political pressure against the independence of the judiciary and expectations about the third annual report by the European Commission on the matter. Geshev will present the position of the prosecution about the overall judicial reform which is expected to da away with the heavy formalism of the Bulgarian penal process and result in an update of legislation in view of the social realities.
The Prosecutor General will brief the EP members of the negative consequences of the closure of specialized justice in Bulgaria. Data show that in nine months alone the number of proceedings against organized crime groups dropped by 50%.
Another highlight of talks will be the prosecution’s commitment to counter malign foreign influence which affects the interests of the EU and NATO against the backdrop of the Russian military aggression in Ukraine and its direct consequences in the region.
