Redirecting more development projects to Dobrich Region was the main topic of a local conference under the Europe in Bulgaria: A Common Future project on Tuesday. The project is implemented by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) with the support of the European Commission. The event was hosted by the BTA Press Club in Dobrich. The participants commented on the development opportunities for the Northeastern region of Bulgaria.
There must be consistency in the decisions that are taken in order to have the necessary sustainability in all projects, said Dobrich Regional Governor Zdravko Zdravkov. He commented that small districts such as Dobrich and Targovishte are disadvantaged, unlike Varna and Shumen. As a pressing project, he noted the section of the second-class road II-29 Varna-Dobrich-Kardam , which is to become a four-lane highway. Zdravkov said that according to the last census the region is depopulating. He stressed on infrastructure development as a major factor in keeping young people in the district.
Other participants gave examples of successful projects in the previous programming period and gave information about upcoming projects.
Rositsa Yordanova, Deputy Mayor for economic development and EU funds of Dobrich Municipality, said that money from Operational Programme Regions in Growth 2014-2020 will go into a project to develop an integrated urban transport system in the city.
Dobrich Regional Information Centre Manager Genoveva Drumeva said that the municipalities in Dobrich Region already have 10 projects agreed upon under the programmes for the new period (2021-2027).
The reconstruction of roads, the construction of street lighting, and the reclamation of the landfill are among the successful projects in Kavarna, said Kavarna Mayor Elena Baltadzhieva.
Eli Petrova, head of the Directorate for Humanitarian Activities, European Projects, Programmes and Economic Policy at Dobrich Municipality, presented the project on joint risk management and partnership in the Calarasi-Dobrich cross-border region.
The next local conference under the Europe in Bulgaria: A Common Future project will take place in Shumen on February 9.
