On Monday, December 5, caretaker Prime Minister Galab Donev will hold a meeting at the Council of Ministers with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolay Milkov and Minister of Justice Krum Zarkov, the Government Information Service said Sunday. During the meeting the participants will review the actions of the caretaker government to defend Bulgaria's readiness to join the Schengen area, the statement said.
The initiative for the meeting comes against the background of strong reactions from the Bulgarian authorities and political forces regarding the position of the Netherlands against Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen area.
On December 8, the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council will vote with two separate decisions on Schengen enlargement. The ministers are expected to vote for the admission of Bulgaria and Romania in one decision and for Croatia in a second decision. Unanimity is required to approve the decision.
