After a wildfire broke out on Thursday near the 69th kilometre of the Trakia Motorway, close to the turnoff for Velingrad, Miroslav Stoyanov, a spokesperson for the Pazardzhik Interior Ministry Regional Directorate, reported later Thursday that individual hotspots are gradually being pinpointed and are beginning to be brought under control. Fire-fighting operations are continuing, he added.
Shortly before 8 p.m., traffic, which had been halted in the area, was allowed to resume in the direction of Sofia, and a few minutes before 9 p.m., in the direction of Burgas, on the Black Sea, as well. Traffic on the Trakia Motorway was severely disrupted due to the major fire near the 69th kilometre, with queues forming on the diversion routes, Stoyanov added.
Two helicopters, fire brigade teams and volunteer units from Belovo, Bratsigovo, Panagyurishte and Strelcha were involved in extinguishing the fire. Bulldozers were also used in the operation.
