Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov reaffirmed the Bulgarian prosecution service's commitment to active cooperation with its European partners at a forum in The Hague, the prosecution said on Saturday.

He did so during bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 20th Consultative Forum of prosecutors general and heads of public prosecution services from EU member states, held at Eurojust headquarters in The Hague. The discussions focused on stronger judicial cooperation in Europe and beyond to address an increasingly complex and globalized criminal environment, including organized crime networks and emerging hybrid threats.

Sarafov met with Eurojust President Michael Schmid to discuss issues of mutual interest, including joint investigation teams and practical cooperation on criminal cases. He again confirmed the Bulgarian prosecution service's readiness to work closely with European partners in response to the current international situation and the challenges facing law enforcement authorities.

Sarafov also met Hungarian Prosecutor General Gabor Balint Nagy and accepted an invitation to visit Budapest in May, following the Hungarian prosecutor general's official visit to Sofia in November 2025. The two noted that cooperation among law enforcement institutions in EU member states must be strengthened continuously to curb cross-border organized crime, especially illegal migration.

Sarafov also met Francisco Jimenez-Villarejo Fernandez, head of the International Department at the Spanish Public Prosecutor's Office, to discuss specific criminal cases involving Bulgarian nationals in Spain. The two noted the importance of judicial cooperation in addressing an increasingly global criminal environment and the high level of interaction between the Bulgarian and Spanish prosecution services, including in joint investigations.

Forum participants also discussed updating the Eurojust Regulation, the prosecution said on Friday. They also looked at the agency's ambition to establish itself as a trusted source of practical guidance on complex cases, judicial tools and emerging crime trends, as well as the challenges posed by digitalization and artificial intelligence.

In October 2025, Sarafov attended the 19th Eurojust Consultative Forum in The Hague, where EU prosecutors backed closer criminal justice cooperation against organized cross-border crime. Later that month in Sofia, Sarafov and Eurojust President Michael Schmid said the Balkan prosecutors forum could serve as a working framework for deeper regional cooperation, and in November Sarafov and Gabor Balint Nagy agreed on joint training and exchanges of experience in cybercrime, money laundering and other offences.
