site.btaGreek Authorities Arrest Fourth Suspect in Firebomb Attacks Against Ruling Party Politicians

Greek police arrested a fourth suspect in connection to the July 1 firebomb attacks targeted at the homes of politicians from the country’s ruling party, New Democracy, in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, Greece’s national television EPT reported on Thursday.

According to EPT, the 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of having received keys to an accommodation later used for hiding the 29-year-old man and the 26-year-old woman suspected by the investigators of committing the first attack at which the mother of former party candidate Afroditi Nestora died.

The man was arrested in Eastern Thessaloniki while he was heading out of his home. Allegedly, he is known in the city’s anarchist circles and has already come to the authorities’ attention, together with his brother.

Three individuals were already remanded in custody over the case - a 29-year-old man a 26-year-old woman and the 24-year-old owner of the lodging which served as cover of the perpetrator before and after committing the crime. In his testimony thew owner claimed he hadn’t known what his property would be used for. The apprehension took place after operations held by the anti-terror police in Thessaloniki and the island of Crete, released the digital outlet of Ekathimerini daily.

As a result of the July 1 attacks, one person died and three others were injured. The offenders used homemade incendiary devices made from camping gas canisters.

Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis defined the attacks as an “act of terrorism” and stressed that the authorities will not tolerate any of those responsible for the crime.
